What to play UTG preflop
Interested in feedback on my preflop UTG at 2/4, 3/6
I will raise with: AA-99, AKs-AJs, AKo-AQo, KQs I will call with: 88, ATs, KJs, QJs I will fold everything else. Including these marginals: AJo, KQo, 77, A9s, JTs Assume a table average of 25% VP$IP and 7% PFR, 10-handed. What do you do different, and why? Thanks, in advance |

Re: What to play UTG preflop
Hi donkeyradish,
I tend to raise KJs UTG at a full table, but I like limping more if the table is extremely loose. I think ATs is an even easier raise. I think you are too tight UTG in general. I would at least limp with AJo and KQo and 77, but I would tend to raise AJo and KQo more often than not. I think limping is a better default play than folding with 77, but at a rather tight table I can see folding being correct. I agree with folding JTs. At a loose table I would limp the A9s and some lower suited aces (how low I would go depends on exactly how loose the table is), but at a tight table I think that's fine. Good luck, einbert |

I limp JTs UTG. Are you sure this is wrong?

Re: What to play UTG preflop
FWIW, I play every hand you call "marginal," and also A8s, KTs, and QTs in the proper situation. 66 and lower pairs sometimes as well.
In my opinion if your not able to find value from AJo and KQo in early position, you should be finding better tables, or maybe finding the appropriate limit such that you are confident enough in your post-flop play to include these hands. I raise both of them UTG. I also raise ATs, 88 (about 75% of the time), and KJs UTG, though I doubt any of those matter that much at all so long as you don't fold them. |

Re: What to play UTG preflop
FWIW, in early position I am making .19 BB/hand with AJo and .39 BB/hand with KQo over like my last 30,000 total hands. I have raised AJo 100% of the time and KQo over 97%. The numbers look screwy because it's really not that large a sample and there's a lot of variance in there, but the point is that these hands absolutely can be played profitably in early position for raises at the 2/4 to 5/10 level (and, in fact, at many higher levels as well).
