How often have you raised the small blind when they have limped in against you? If you've done it more than once recently they may have decided that their hand is good and wanted to induce the move you did in order to get all your chips in. ie they fully intended to go all the way with this hand regardless. Their hand isn't brilliant, but I'm guessing the range you might push in this spot isn't great either. I think you both played it fine, though I think it may have been better to raise you pre flop instead of calling. However the call is better if you had been previously raising in that spot.

As stated above it depends on how many times you raised the BB. Although an AI in a blind battle is too much likely a stealing attempt. Sure if he caught 72o he would have folded, but wouldn't raising like 3-5x BB have the same effect? Putting you on a range is fairly difficult, but him holding an Ace probably convinced him to make a stand.
