The probability of getting called by a lesser hand is not the end of it. Of course a rational player is more apt to call a smaller bet. But getting called once for a large bet can more than make up for several small wins. Most importantly, when you vary the size of your bets, at worst you send your opponent coded messages as to what you have, and at best you turn the game into ro-sham-bo. "Let's see. He bet small with the nuts last time, so this time he probably doesn't have much when he bets small. I'll go scissors."
