What book should I listen to next
Thus far my membership with www.audible.com has allowed me to listen to "A People's History of the United States" and "A Short History of Nearly Everything" during my commute. I'm surprised by the fact that it's taken me all month to get through these two; I guess I underestimated exactly how much time I spend in the car. Anyway, up to now, I've put these titles in my wishlist:
1984 (Unabridged); George Orwell All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten (Unabridged); Robert Fulghum America (The Audiobook); Jon Stewart Black Like Me (Unabridged); John Griffin Blink (Unabridged); Malcolm Gladwell Crime and Punishment (Unabridged); Fyodor Dostoevsky Den of Thieves (Unabridged); James Stewart Freakonomics (Unabridged); Steven, Stephen Levitt, Dubner Getting Things Done; David Allen Getting to Yes (Unabridged); Roger, William, Bruce Fisher, Ury, Patton How to Win Friends & Influence People (Unabridged); Dale Carnegie In a Sunburned Country (Unabridged); Bill Bryson Into Thin Air (Unabridged); Jon Krakauer Learn in Your Car: Spanish, Level 1; Henry Raymond My Life, Volume I (Unabridged); Bill Clinton My Life, Volume II (Unabridged); Bill Clinton Pride and Prejudice (Unabridged); Jane Austen Sense and Sensibility (Unabridged); Jane Austen The Case for Democracy; Natan, Ron Sharansky, Dermer The Civil War: A Narrative, Volume I (Unabridged); Shelby Foote The Civil War: A Narrative, Volume II (Unabridged); Shelby Foote The Civil War: A Narrative, Volume III (Unabridged); Shelby Foote The Da Vinci Code (Unabridged); Dan Brown The Feynman Lectures on Physics: Volume 1; Richard Feynman The Future for Investors (Unabridged); Jeremy Siegel The Millionaire Next Door (Unabridged); Thomas, William Stanley, Danko The Psychology of Winning; Denis Waitley The Relationship Cure; John, Joan Gottman, DeClaire Truth and Fiction in The Da Vinci Code (Unabridged); Bart Ehrman Ulysses, Volume 1: Episodes 1-3 (Unabridged); James Joyce Ulysses, Volume 2: Episodes 4-15 (Unabridged); James Joyce Ulysses, Volume 3: Episodes 16-18 (Unabridged); James Joyce War and Peace (Unabridged); Leo Tolstoy This list may or may not convey the fact that I am not terribly interested in fiction, but more interested in improving myself and/or becoming more learned. Also worth noting is that some of these selections are too ambitious, with regards to their length. Given what I know now about how quickly I can get through material, selecting something like My Life unabridged (50 total hours listening time) might not make sense. Sadly, there are basically no poker books available for download. |

If I had to choose one, I'd go with Dostoevsky. How did you like Zinn's book btw? Eye-opening, eh?

Pay special attention to the chapter on the effect of posting on the internet about books on tape. [/ QUOTE ] It would seem this is some sort of sarcastic insult. Frankly, I'm not "getting it", but don't take this to mean that appending an explanation is either warranted or wanted. [ QUOTE ] If I had to choose one, I'd go with Dostoevsky. How did you like Zinn's book btw? Eye-opening, eh? [/ QUOTE ] I appreciated the thrust of the message, and while it was indeed eye opening, and did make me distrustful of the government, I thought it went a tad overboard. What I mean is, it did so to the extent that it's credibility became suspect, and became so much agenda-pushing. The author did alot of 'quote one random person', as if it were proof of the public's general attitude overall towards some issue. Admittedly, the author acknowledged the slant was an intentional response to centuries of history otherwise slanted in favor of the oppressors, but it still detracted from the experience, IMO. It's completely unrelated subject matter, but I thought I'd mention I'm enjoying Short History of Nearly Everything signifigantly more. I found Damon and Zinn to be a bit dry, whereas the narrator of SHoNE is amazingly adept at delivering the book in a conversational tone. And the subject matter is more personally interesting to boot (Science >> Politics). |

(Science >> Politics). [/ QUOTE ] I'd like to get all the Feynman lectures on physics, but there's freaking twenty of them, they're short, and I only get two books per month. Anyone know of other places to get audio book content? |

[ QUOTE ]
Black Like Me (Unabridged); John Griffin [/ QUOTE ] One of the greatest books I've ever read; I think this, "Working" by Studs Terkel, and "Maus" by Art Speigelman are three books that should be read by every kid in high school (but aren't already). [ QUOTE ] Getting Things Done; David Allen [/ QUOTE ] Great book and fantastically productive "way of life", but I don't know how helpful the audio version is going to be - a lot of its value to me came as a reference manual. I don't know how much you're going to be able to get out of it if you don't take notes in the car, but maybe you want to give it a shot. [ QUOTE ] The Millionaire Next Door (Unabridged); Thomas, William Stanley, Danko [/ QUOTE ] I couldn't find it on Audible, but there's an excellent book by Nassim Taleb called "Fooled by Randomness" which explains in detail why books like this "millionaire next door" aren't worth reading. And get rid of these too: [ QUOTE ] My Life, Volume I (Unabridged); Bill Clinton My Life, Volume II (Unabridged); Bill Clinton [/ QUOTE ] If you're going to listen to a 900-page biography of somebody, listen to a biography of someone worthwhile like Tesla or Feynman or something (I couldn't find James Gleick's bio of Feynman, "Genius", but they do have two autobiographical books of Feynman's, "Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman" and "What do YOU Care What People Think?", both of which I highly recommend...this isn't partisan, btw: I would have advised getting rid of Bush's memoirs too :P) |

If you like fantasy at all The Wheel of Time series is good. I'm just starting book 3 and loving it. I also like listening to all the Harry Potters.
