Is this a bad beat or did I completely misplay it?

Last night I was plying in a three table NL Holdem tourney at a K of C Hall. 25 players to start, we were down to 16.

Blinds are 75/150
Stack sizes are approximate.

1. Button (1,200)
2. SB (1,500)
3. BB (1,700)
4. UTG (1,200)
5. UTG +1 (1,300)
6. MP (800)
7. MP2 (1,000)
8. Hero (785)

It's folded to me I call with Qh 10d. Button and SB fold, BB Checks.

Pot is $375

Flop comes 5s 10c Jh. BB checks I bet $200. BB raises me $435 (all in). I think about it, have a feeling he doesn't have a Jack and call it.

BB turns over 10h 3d.

Turn card is As. River is 3s.

Should I have raised pre-flop? If so, what other mistakes did I make? Should I have never played this hand to begin with?

This a bad beat post with bad play involved in it. Push preflop to steal the blinds. Your stack is too small to limp with those blinds.

It was a bad beat, and you did misplay it horribly. There should never be a time where you "limp" for 20% of your stack!! Either raise all-in or just fold pre-flop. In that particular situation, being that short-stacked, I'm open-pushing if it's folded to me with pretty much any two.

You've got 3.5 circuits of the table left, your in great position. With any two 10 or higher, I'm pushing pre-flop with no one in the pot to try to steal the blinds.

At what point are you supposed to be making the decision to push? Is it 10BB or less? And should a push always be all in?

Yes. 10BBs is kind of the defacto amount with which to push. Some may wait to get as low as 6-8 or do it as high as 12-15BBs, it is dependent on who's to your left. If you have a huge stack next to you then waiting until you have 6 BB's won't work. You want to have some folding equity whenever you are pushing. Ideally you're not pushing into stacks too large or too short- the big ones don't care and the shorties are gonna have to gamble to stay in the tourny.

Also "pushing" means all-in.
