I'd say the rise of Rome first and foremost, which created a common legacy and language (Latin) throughout Europe.

Secondly, the rise of the British Empire (tied to the industrial revoluton arising in Britain) in promoting the Westernisation of most of the world, helping to promote shared values, similar legal and political structures and suchlike.
