Re: Moving up from NL10/20 to 25/50 and/or 50/100
Like KKF said but it needs to be emphasized more. You don't need to just be good and "feel comfortable" shed, you need to be DAMN GOOD. Especially because you will lack any real game selection ability if you want to play every day. And why do you think SR is so hard to beat? It's not just because he might be the best shed online high level nl player, it is also because he has an extremely large roll and uses it as a weapon and is able to play his style because of that day in and day out. You need a similar roll cause a small one and overly weak tight play won't cut it shed.

Re: Moving up from NL10/20 to 25/50 and/or 50/100
I've had good success in terms of winrate at the 25/50 and 50/100 by being very, very particular about the spots I pick, I'm in no sense a regular in these games and will not likely be one until I've improved my SH and HU skills which has been my major poker project of the last 60 days.
What I have been doing is either hopping into the games with a full stack when there are 8+ people and I can get position on a noticeable fish or two with a decent stack size. I'll then play just standard ABC poker though considerably more aggro than usual at 10/20 against the non fish, at that level since the sharks will put you to the test far, far more often than at 10/20 on either Stars or Party and being very aggressive about raising to isolate the fish and cutting down the odds of playing multiway pots with a defined hand if I'm more than 50x BB. Obviously my strategy changes substantially against the non fish as I get deeper stacked and there are several deeper stacks behind me. If I can't get the position I want, I'll still sit at a table like that with a short buyin and do the tight/move in special strategy, a surprising # of very good short handed specialists will make very, very loose calls against a 20x-40x BB move in after they've been reraised all in for 20x-40x, regardless of how tight I've been. I'm assuming this is for strategic reasons, they want me out of there because my doing that interferes with the LAG/Table captain style they tend to have in a full ring game but I've got plenty of bankroll for this strategy so if I'm +EV in this scenario I can easily deal with the variance and I've no shame about hitting and running with a double up if circumstances aren't good in that seat for playing a larger stack. I'll also do this with a larger buyin SH if there are a few exceedingly large deep stacks playing very, very aggro against each other preflop. I'll sit with a medium stack and play the move in game and hit and run. I've managed to do this and be substantially +EV the vast majority of the times I've been called, again I know these are veteran SH players who are doubtless well aware that they are -EV on the call but are presumably assuming that they will use their bankroll/and or ability to outplay me SH with a deeper stack and that they'll get it back/or strategic reasons vs the deeper stack want my butt out of their deep stack game and are willing to take chances for that for result, which since I'll hit and run if I win are basically correct though not in the way they assume since many short stacks lack the discipline to hit and run after a double up on a loose call at these stakes, they start dreaming of the monster run of cards/double ups etc. Needless to say, I've been doing this with a variety of accounts/sites and I've been called a substantial # of very impolite names for hitting and running but oh well. |

Just as a matter of interest LB, what sort of BB/100 are you earning at the Party 2k games?

Re: Moving up from NL10/20 to 25/50 and/or 50/100
Overall I have a 4.53 BB/100, a 5.72 for september and 11.70 for October (I think I'm playing much better although I've been running pretty well the last week or so, doubt I can keep it that high). I'd be interested to hear what other people's are, especially those that play 25/50. I have no idea really if that's mediocre or really good or too low to have a good shot at higher stakes.
I saw a full game going on at 25/50 so took a shot today, won about 1500 off a short stack right away with AK vs AJ and an ace on the flop. Then lost some folding QQ to a K on the river and a pot size reraise. Then lost a bunch doubling up a 2500 stack with AK vs A4 and a K44 on the flop. So was back down to 2500 or so. Then hit a set and won a decent sized pot and folded QQ again to a 558 board and one guy really pushing hard into a dry side pot. Picked up a few small pots and got back to around 4,000. People were trickling out the whole time so ended up 4 handed and I picked up KK. Flop came 10 10 7 and the other guy lead out to me with pot sized raises on every street. I sort of thought he was just stepping up his aggression for being only 4 handed (he was raising a lot preflop) and he probably thought I missed completley so called him down and he had pocket 7's. Probably just a case of me sucking at shorthanded. At least I lost my first 5k there and don't feel too bad about it. |
