bose sucks.

sennheisers or beyerdynamic for cans. in ear monitors for earphones.

the bose triports break way too easily, but the quietcomforts seem pretty good (though i'd recommend senns over them).

if you know whats good for you you'll get yourself a pair of sennheiser hd600/650s and a decent ($250ish) tube amp to power it. best headphone/amp combo for under a grand, no question.

I believe it's impossible to beat Grado SR60 in its price range, however it's unlikely that an iPod can pull them off.

grados are some of the lowest impedance headphones sold on the market. they dont need an amp by any means, and they benefit from an amp much less then something like the sennheiser hd580, which i use AMPED.

I'm not a huge headphone nerd, so I should have said "the original poster most likely means that the headphones in question would need an amp."
