It's like any other sport... you don't stop running/shooting/carrying the ball etc. until the whistle is blown and the Ref is stopping the action.

I just hold onto my cards until the dealer looks at me and asks for them back.

Though I wait as well, I don't wait for the dealer to ask. I wait for him to start pushing me the pot. I am a little annoyed by people who wait for the dealer to ask. Though it does give the image of a clueless idiot. Hmm, maybe I'll start...

Good point but don't start. [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] I'm as careful as they come but if the dealer is starting to push you the pot (or acknowledges you have the winning hand) it's safe to release your cards.
