My childhood friend's father was in the mob. He apparently was an executioner for Chicago Heights mob boss Albert Tocco. I think met him briefly once or twice, but my friend never lived with him while I knew him. I do specifically recall seeing his face being in the newspaper at least once, and he was convicted and put in prison for ~20 years.

My mother has a cousin (she calls everyone who is related to her "my cousin") who was high up in Whitey Bulger's group in Boston.

I say "was", because he's behind bars for life now.

I never met the guy. I can't even remember his name.

He had a "cookout" at his place on the Cape once a year. My mother would go, and my brothers and sisters often went. They came back and described the catered cookout (shrimp and lobster at a cookout?), and the mansion where it was held.

BTW, my mother is still boycotting "The Sopranos" for the negative stereotypes it portrays.
