It is unequivocally his responsibility to protect his hand. His sloppy play gave you information he should not have, and it is not wrong for you to act on it.

It would be different if you were trying to Annie Duke the guy and shot a look at his cards every time, but that's simply not the case here. The guy made a sloppy mistake, make him pay for it.
