2nd Vegas trip, 1st for poker
Hi folks, hoping to get a little advice for my first B&M visit. I'll be staying at the Tropicana Oct. 10-13. between flights, I plan on having 6 sessions. I'm curious to know which levels to play with my $1000 bankroll.
I'm leaning towards 2/4, but Phil H. tells me i'm throwing my money away with rake + tips. Coming from Texas, I don't get to see a whole lot of limit games. I'm really used to online micro limit and live low buyin tourneys. I'm positive in winnings at both, but by no means sitting on a couch stuffed with $100 bills. I plan on hitting Bally's, Paris, and Aladdin based on my research at allvegaspoker.com. I'm primarily looking for some loose action, but not sure how Monday - Thursday will cater to that wish. any advice would be appreciated! |

Re: 2nd Vegas trip, 1st for poker
If you want limit, then yes stepping above 2/4 will help with the rake. Bally's will have 2/4 for sure, and probably 3/6. Paris (from reports here) is 3/6. Alladin should also have 3/6. I have found 3/6 games at Bally's Monday before noon.
All should also offer you 1/2 NL games that you might like. Keep in mind that close by to the Trop you also have MGM, and you really want to stop by there. Plenty of tourists, nice new card room, and you will certainly find 1/2NL. For FL at MGM, the 6/12 game does not seem to be going there regularly, but you should be able to get 4/8. Good luck, have fun, and post a trip report. |

Re: 2nd Vegas trip, 1st for poker
I'll post a trip report for sure. and I will not be playing any NL. on my 1st trip I sat down at a 1/2 NL game and psychologically was not there. After blinding out about 1/2 my stack I decided Vegas NL just isn't for me (yet). I'm not prepared to play it this time either.

If you can get off the strip, you might want to try the Station Casinos. Sunset Station and several other Station properties spread $3/$6/$9 Hold'Em which is $3 before the flop and on the flop, $6 on the turn and $9 on the river. That way you're playing somewhere between $3/$6 and $4/$8.

Re: 2nd Vegas trip, 1st for poker
The Trop has a small poker room now where you can get your feet wet, $1-3 spread limit (you can choose to bet $1-3 on all betting rounds).
You're in a good location -- you can walk across the pedestrian overpass to the Excalibur, which has $1-3 spread and $2-6 spread. Across the other overpass, you'll find the MGM Grand, which has a really nice room - you can find $2/4, $3/6 and up. There are lots of young players who don't know so much about limit. Bally's is good -- they have $2/4 and $4/8, the Aladdin has some decent and loose $3/6 tables. $1,000 is plenty for the trip. I'd probably play $3/6 and $4/8 if you're up to it. If so, then you should play at the Bellagio and the Wynn, both because they are beautiful poker rooms and because you can find some great games. $4/8 is the lowest limit at those rooms, so inexperienced people who stay there and want to play poker are starting out at $4/8. |

The Alladin also has a few daily tournaments that aren't expensive - all under $100. They start at 10am....one at 12 and 7, too.

[/ QUOTE ] That is exactly what I was going to say. You want to play the lowest limit offered. The lowest limit offered at those two places is higher than the lowest limit offered anywhere else. So the rake isn't as punitive and also (more importantly) you'll be playing the same fish but for twice as much money, which means you make mad cash. |

What's the usual buyin for these live 4/8 games? $300?

I'd probably sit down with $200 on the table for the $4/8 game.
