So that means I need a pci video card right? I have two available pci slots in an Emachines T1840, my OS is XP. I only need to get a card that has one output and I can use the built-in jack for the other monitor right? Any recomendations?
Thanks- this stuff can be hard for a Neanderthal |

I think you need a new motherboard. But if that is not an option, you will need a PCI video card with dual-monitor support. I don't think you can run one monitor off your monitor port (I assume you have a built-in video card) and the other off of a PCI video card.
Somthing like this: ATI 7500 |

You can just put in a PCI video card and run dual monitors. There is one problem, though. Your Emachine uses Intel 845GL 3D Graphics which uses the systems resources, as opposed to a separate video card which carries its’ own memory and processor.
What that means to you is that if you were to add a PCI card (they are very inexpensive, can be had for under $20) and only use the added card to run one monitor, your system would run considerably faster. If you add the PCI card and run two monitors, you will notice a very definite slow down, and you might be unhappy with it. So the advice to buy a PCI card that will run two monitors might just be your best choice, even though it will cost quite a bit more than a single card, it will probably improve your computers’ performance overall, as well as allow you to run another monitor. |
