There used to be a great internet radio station, boombastic. When I googled it it took me to etherbeat.com. The website has a similar look to the old boombastic so it's probably just a cosmetic change. Give it a listen and you'll hear a lot of people that you want to look up and check out.

Africa in the 70's produced a lot of great funk, better than most American. The best compilation is Nigeria 70 although that is out of print. There are a couple of other compilations that are in print. If you like the African stuff (Afrobeat) look at albums by Fela and Tony Allen (his drummer). A good Fela disc to start with is his live album with Ginger Baker. It would take me way too long to describe the man's career but he is well worth reading about. In some ways similar to Bob Marley but a more hardcore life, e.g. had numerous wives, lived in his own compound that he considered it's own state, targeted by police for his political activism, turned out the police chief's teenage daughter as one of his dancers/lovers, had his compound over run by the military/police twice, cops threw his Mom out a window, owned and played regularly at a nightclub in the worst section of Lagos, smoked more weed than just about anyone, prison time, died of AIDS, etc. etc. Damn good musician.

regards,

raisins

Wow.

That's real. Really real.
Any funk list must contain some Meters, tho'.
Try: Look-Ka Py Py or Cissy Strut.

Fela Kuti is the shiznit.

I concur with everything rasisins said. Afrobeat in general is some of the greatest music ever produced.

Raisins, have you heard of Afrodisiac Soundsystem. I dont think its a group, but a producer, maybe more. Anyway they sample all afrobeat and mix it with contemporary hip-hop, and old school disco and funk. Its IMHO, some of the best [censored] thats come out the past couple years.

Kind of hard to track down, and only available on vinyl I think but its worth it.

I noticed this afterwards, but yeah, the Meters were a gaping omission in the list. "Cissy Strut" is perhaps one of the most essential funk tracks.

Zigaboo Modeliste deserves credit as one of the original "funky drummers".

Not a single mention of James Brown yet. This thread blows.
