I was also checking the turn to avoid getting check/raised and to induce a bluff on the river until BK_ told me to bet the turn and check the river. This is the explanation that I came up with as well and I'm pretty sure it is right. Especially in these SSNL games where people will not c/r the turn with a worse hand and are unlikely to bluff the river so you basically lose both rationales for checking the turn in any case.
