You must be fun at parties.

This is also awful advice. Seriously.

Actually, this is rather good advice. Seriously.

buying a really nice car is super dumb. Think of all the other things you can do that would make you happier. You have to look at happiness EV factor. Is buying a really expensive car the most likely thing to increase your happiness +EV? Instead of blowing 50k on a car (or something absurd), why don't you take some friends to Europe or something. This would be MUCH more fun.

Nope bad advice. If you aren't going to spend much on a car, buy a Civic, better reliability, better gas mileage, and it holds it's value longer.

Buy a Camry. Given that you're a gambler, you'll want to convey a sense of stability. Besides, if you purchase an 80k sportscar, you'll be setting up expectations that you can't afford.

i have since sold the porsche and traded it in for a BMW 330i premium sport, just because i'd rather lower expenses in case of a nasty run of cards,

[/ QUOTE ]

Actually this is a really good call. 330i with the M kit is a great car (around $40K) but is not as expensive to insure/maintain as the M3 or other "high end cars". It would also hold it's resale value very well (when the new 3 series came out the price of old one's actually went up - not a good sign for BMW). I take back the M5 comment. It's a sick car (and one of my dream cars) but maybe a little too much.

Also, if you have time and a little knowledge, BWMs are really easy to work on (once out of warrenty). I do almost all my own work on my 3 series and I'm no mechanic (just not afraid to open'er up). You can get parts a lot cheaper than you would think. Check places like bavarian autosports.

Old Fart response below:

Your response will probably get crap from all the 20-year olds that cruise here, but there is nothing wrong with getting a nice car that costs less than half of $80K and puting your excess cash into a Roth, CD's, Real Estate and maybe a small business.

Think smart, live well in the future.

Think "flashy" and I would guess that the future will not be as bright.
