Default 2/4 O8 w/ kill @ Taj - Underfull hand

2/4 with full kill at the Taj on Saturday afternoon, players are pretty terrible.

I waited for my big blind a full round. Villain is a big donk, running his mouth about the 3/6 2-way game. He's called down with A6 lows, bottom two pair, haven't seen him raise. He's playing any middle cards, any ace with a card under 8, and showing down something like TT for high.

Anywho, 7 limps to me and I check 99J3 in the big blind.

Flop comes A [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]9 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]4 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

SB checks, I bet, only MP and Villain call.

Turn A [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

I probably still need to bet here, so I do, only Villain calls. The problem is, what is a safe card on the river besides a 9? Any baby would seemingly make him the nut boat. Do I just check/fold?

River is an ugly 5 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

I check, Villain bets, everyone fold here or is there any value of calling hoping he just has low?

Since you are calling for 1/2. Toss it.

If you really hate the guy wait til you have a hand which you can get maximum value out of.

If he's that bad, I can't see how you're beat here for high so often. Especially when you haven't been raised at any point. Calling 1 BB to win ~3-4BB seems really straightforward.

Burdz - Call. Villain may have nothing.

When you bet the flop and then bet the turn but then check the river, you should fully expect a bet from an opponent who has position on you.

Villain may have missed a draw, but smell weakness. Or Villain could think trip aces will be a winner and be betting accordingly. Or Villain could be betting some lesser hand - or bluffing. Hard to tell. I think of bets from opponents in this siutation as positional bets. Could be something, could be nothing.

If you know Villain has an ace and three random cards, then Villain is the favorite. Here's the sim:

board...AA459n
hand....high.....low.....scoop....total
AXYZ....0 .....1342.5 ...4804 ... 6146.5
99J3....1342.5 ...0 .....2511 ... 3853.5

However, you don't know that Villain has an ace.

Moreover, it doesn't matter.

If I've counted correctly, there are 8.5 big bets in the pot and it will only cost you one more big bet to see. Even if you're certain Villain does have a hand with an ace, Villain is nowhere near an 8.5 to 1 favorite (looks more like about 5 to 3).

Thus you figure to win often enough to make the call worth while.

Thanks for the always thoughtful-detailed reply Buzz, you are one of the most knowledgable and helpful 2+2ers around.

I hated it and called, and he showed AK56 for the runner-runner boat, and was actually congratulated by the entire table on his great savvy play (I'm not even kidding, people were patting this guy on the back and cheering him for chasing TPTK and a 56 low!)

Well sure - I would have complimented him too. You want to encourage players to continue to take bad risks like that - this is just a form of positive reinforcement...
