Never Impressed with Scotty Nguyen
I've heard people call this guy a poker legend and this and that. Whenever I see him in tournaments he busts out with mediocre hands or re-raises and calls all ins with K10 or QJ off.
Am I missing something? Robert Varkonyi, Chris Moneymaker have WSOP Main Event titles, too. Not saying he's a bad player but I just don't put him up there as one of the best poker players in the world. Tell me I'm wrong. |

Only three cashes for $100k+ so far this year. That's rough. Good thing he has all thos WSOP and WPT final tables to live off of. |

Re: Never Impressed with Scotty Nguyen
I don't think you have to worry about Scotty. Money and Varkonyi are definitely pretty average when it comes to "big time pros," Scotty might not be the best, but he's pretty damn good. You can't expect crazy success at MTT tournies there are too many variables. I don't put him in the top 10 of current Pro MTT players but he's probally close. Winning the WSOP consistantly of course is impossible now, but Scotty is a pretty consistant pro with numerous FTs under his belt every year.

Play with him for a few hours and you will soon see why this guy is so good. The first time I played with him in a tournament I was amazed at his ability to read the other players (including me). I swear there were times when he did not even look at his hole cards. It was fun to watch. No fear baby. |

Re: Never Impressed with Scotty Nguyen
For NL hold'em tournament players I would rate a lot of players ahead of Scotty Nguyen, he's clearly fallen off the play he had before the year 2000.

Re: Never Impressed with Scotty Nguyen
Despite being one of a poster boy for "pro overrated due to TV exposure" (according to messages I've read here and on recpoker), Phillips has him in his top-10 and Temp Hutter vouches for his skills too. His results aren't too bad either.
He's probably just a bad TV player. |

Re: Never Impressed with Scotty Nguyen
I've always felt he's very good, but either gets impatient or a little intoxicated and then starts doing stupid things. It also seems recently that once he reaches the final table he's not doing the things that probably got him there in the first place.
