He never makes an insightful comment though. I doubt he even knows what OPS is. Plus, his pregame show on WSB is so bad and he is so bitter, it's funny.

I just don't see where the marketing/production department is putting together these programs. I mean they can't think an ex-player mumbling that "you'd like to at least hit a flyball here" with a runner on third and one out is what the listeners want.

McCarver and Sterling are pretty bad.

Two of the best are kay and Kaat.

I think a big part of the problem is that baseball has a ton of downtime. This makes it very difficult for announcers to not sound like jackasses because they don't like dead air. This leads especially to former players prattling on and on about their glory days.

Ugh. Tonight's Cubs-Cards game. Joe Morgan. Jon Miller. At times it's Boom goes the dynamite bad.

To the gentlemen who likes Chip Caray - I haven't listened to many Braves games, but I thought he was just fine when paired with a solid analyst (Steve Stone for example). I'll take that booth anyday.

He's really toned down a lot of his dumb comments, and his voice is great.

For most annoying: Joe Buck is the worst followed by the grand salami idiot in Seattle.

[/ QUOTE ]

I hate Joe Buck's sanctimonious ass too, but don't be dissing Dave Niehaus. He was basically the only good thing about the Mariners for their first 15 years of existence. He is slipping a bit now with age, but his voice will always be Mariners baseball for me.

Why are baseball broadcasers so awful?

[/ QUOTE ]

Steve Stone was the best broadcaster in all of baseball. Stone was run out of chicago by dusty baker because stones negative comentary was hurting the feelings of baker's delicate cubbies.

To answer your question, I think a significant part of the problem is that "go team go" yes men are hired instead of honest and critical broadcasters that angry fans can identify with.
