I'd raise the turn instead of river.
Even if he's got odds to call, you're making money on raising the turn.

Would you have raised the river if it came:
A?
K?
Q?

[/ QUOTE ]

This is funny. He asked me after the hand if I intended to raise the river if it came a Q. The assumption was I wouldn't raise if it were A or K.

I'm not raising an A river, but I would likely raise both a K and a Q.

On the other hand, how are you going to raise someone wearing a $7,000 dollar suit? COME ON!

Sorry, reference to season 2, which you haven't seen. I should get you the CD's next time I see you.

Why do you want him to lead every street when you're in position? Also, if you're going to call the preflop 3-bet it should be with the intention of getting a lot of flop action.

[/ QUOTE ]

I think that was certainly the big mistake here.

[/ QUOTE ]

No, the mistake was preflop. Cap, not close. Your capping range should be ginormous there.

Even if that extra SB gets him to not call the river raise, or call the river bet if the turn is raised? It sounds like this guy has at least some modicum of thought process, so once you cap the flop, you've still got to slow down a bit somewhere to get him to keep taking the lead on all streets, until you decide to raise him.

Raise him on the turn to give him a chance to commit a FToP mistake, or raise him on the river to extract 3BB on the last two streets either way.

OR, if you cap the flop, he may just find a fold on one of those streets. Actually, now that I think about it more I think I like the turn raise instead -- simply from a "make him make a mistake by folding" standpoint -- if he's capable of that.

I think he'll still lead, at least maybe the flop. I sometimes call a 3 bet to make it look like a steal, but against a thinking player, and especially a friend, I cap. I think it is even more disguising in this case and besides, JJ is a vulnerable hand and he probably holds a decent enough hand with at least one overcard, if not two.
