Qualities of a real good home game...help me out please
Soon...I want to start a really, really good home game... featuring small-buy ($20 and below) No Limit Holdem tournaments. What I'm wondering is...what do you look for in a good home game?...especially what is it that strikes you that says, 'I want to come back here and play again'...Here's what I'm guessing...decent number of players, good players, refreshments, on-time starts, clear rules, comfortable chairs, regular playing schedule, good blind structures, nice chips, Holdem style table, friendly players (no obnoxious jerks)...does that sound about right?

Re: Qualities of a real good home game...help me out please
The only thing I can think to add is that a game should ideally have no set ending time. A good poker game should end on its own. If you have to set a time, make it sunrise.
Edit: just realized you said tournaments, so the end time thing doesn't really apply. I'd suggest having a cash game after the tournament, though. |

I like to print out tournament flyers with the blinds schedule, payouts, and chip denominations. There's a sample at www.homepokertourney.com
Also, if you have the same group of guys back on a regular basis, why not do a league? Shameless plug: www.homepokerclub.net steve North Shore Low Rollers |

I agree with the last post. Homepokertouney.com should be able to provide you with all the info you need to set up a great game. Finding cool people is up to you though. Good luck

Re: Qualities of a real good home game...help me out please
I like to emphasize the clear rules part, because it is the only reason I have ever left a regular game. Simple things like leaving the cards on the table, burning cards only right before you flip them (this is what got the game I left into trouble, as they flipped the 'wrong' card that would have given me the win), no slowrolling, show one show all. Also have a plan for things like exposed cards, nothing looks worse than when a card is exposed and the dealer asks "what do I do?", and everyone goes "I don't know". These things will help the game run smooth, and make people feel safe playing at your game. This in my mind sets apart good games from all the others.

Be clear and quick and certain on any rulings you have to make.
You wrote good players. You need some good people who are bad players...enough of them so that no one thinks he is the worst player. As long as I'm better than someone, that's good enough to keep me coming. |

protect the players and have a good time! everything else will fall in place. (do have the rules established though)
