2/4 NL PP 6 max

Hero (550) SB with A[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]
Villain (400) MP (villain just sat down and posted)

Preflop
one limper UTG, and two players who just sat down, posted, and then checked, hero makes it 25 to play, only villain calls.

Flop (Pot 64)
A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 4[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]
Hero bets 40, villain calls

Turn (Pot 144)
5[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]
Hero checks, villain bets 80, hero strongly considers check-raising all-in, but decides against it, and calls

River (Pot 304)
6[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]
Hero checks, villain pushes for 250 odd, hero calls

Should have checked raised on the turn but it looks like an obvious staight or set. I would have folded it with no read.

jeesh, my short-handed skillz are not good enough to give advice on this hand, so some one please tell us what is correct here, i am very curious

fwiw my thought process:

probably AQ/44, maybe AJ/AT/bluff/semi-bluff-gutshot, factor in pot odds and it's a close call

Obviously he could have 78s, but I would think that he ran into a set like I said in my post.

My bad i meant to say that he could have been playing 78 suited, but I do not see it likely that he was playing and calling 78 suited. Thus I see a reason that he was playing pockets and hit his set. Tell me if I am right or wrong. I am still learning a lot by posting here and I am trying to gain as much knowledge as I can by doing this.

you are correct about a set, 44 is likely here

and as you said yourself 78 suited has 0 reason to call this flop
