I think self parking at both places is OK is you use your head. At Commerce take Tubeway (street, avenue?) on the northwest side and park behind the hotel. That lot is more brightly lit than the other lots and you have direct access to top section.

I only tip the guy that brings my car back to me. Are you supposed to tip the guy that takes your car too? I've always assumed they pooled tips, but maybe not...

If you are carrying enough cash to make you worried about getting mugged, you probably have enough to cough up for valet parking.
