man, why are some of you guys such pricks?

Regular SH handed play has that effect on you

I think I can say with pride that the SH regulars will come down harder on whine posts than any other forum.

understood, and they have that right. nobody wants to see their forum go to crap. but my question was honestly more from an analytical standpoint. honestly. i wasn't complaining. you'll never see me moan over bad luck.

It should change as you progress, also you should be playinghow you are comfortable- not to a certain set of numbers.
If you are just starting out and your vpip is in the low 20's then you should be fine- start adding hands as you feel more comfortable with your aggression and decision making processes.

People in general tend to respect your bets less in a SH game, and chase much more frequently, thinking that their hand might be good. The higher the frequency of chasing, the more bad beats you'll get. Simple as that.

while my luck feels "normal" in full rings, my luck feels abysmal in the short games.

Meh, i was beating full ring pretty well, then I moved to 1/2 6 max which I heard was notoriously soft, and I did okay but not great. I figured it was bad luck, but I eventually just realized my game wasn't that great. It's easy to be "good" at ring, so I got cocky and over estimated my skill. Now I'm slowly retooling my game so that it's better. Just concentrate on your game and don't worry about the bad beats. You just think you see more because you play more hands and more marginal situations.

Seriously though man, there isn't luck.

[/ QUOTE ]

i was worried before i opened this thread that stupid things were going to be said - i am relieved that someone got it right

all luck whether it be good or bad is evil - i never wish it to people and when they wish it to me i tell them its not required

poker is a game of skill - to say that it involves skill and luck simply confuses the distinction between games of skill and games of chance - all games of skill involve chance but games of chance involve no skill - they are mutually exclusive expressions

if i play a bridge match against an average player i will beat him maybe 8-9 times out of 10 (i am seriously good at bridge) - if i play an average poker player over a theoretically similar match (and just assume that i am seriously good at poker too) then i might only win 6-7 times - the difference is simply explained by the fact that i have a smaller edge in poker

in short handed hold'em your constantly taking smaller edges than you do in a ring game - fortunately there are more edges to take than in a ring game but the net effect is that real poker players who appreciate the challenge of losing make heaps of money playing short handed whilst the cowardly technicians swap inane bad beat stories as they grind out a profit in ring games

How does a person that has been around for almost 600 posts ask this question?

The worst is trying to go from playing 5/10 6-max for 1 year to full ring. Yuck. I like, just kind of assumed that everything I was doing was right :-).

They need 5/10 6max tables at casinos.

Do you really think ring games are that much harder to profit from?

If so, it goes a long way to explaining the uber-cynical, inflexible and humourless attitude that seems so prevalent in the small stakes forum.

(It seems no matter how many times you tell them a player is very bad, if he raises then "he can beat TP". They also seem somewhat obsessed with AA... ).

I have been playing a few small ring games as by way of taking a break after SH seemed to be getting a bit of a grind. I expect I shall be driven back here before long, not by the games but, by the anally-retentives is SS. At least the folk here seem human...

no - but surely you find it dull after short handed - if you programmed a bot to play limit holdem would it be a 5 man game or a seemingly more intricate 10 man game ?

it does fit my slanted view that ring game players would be more inflexible and self-assured - either that or you spat the dummy at some point and pissed them off
