Default Bethpage Black Trip Report

After being on Long Island for the past 12 months, I finally got a chance to play The Black Course. This course is famous for hosting the 2002 US Open, won by Tiger Woods (-3). Some of the PGA players complained about it being too difficult. The Open will return in 2009 with some modified tee boxes that were insane. We also picked about the worst day of my 12 months here to play the course. Our tee time was at 12:06pm with a temperature of 88 degrees, humidity of 88%, and "feels like temperature" of 98. i drank 3 gatorades, 5 bottles of water, and an iced tea(only had to use the bathroom once, that's how hot it was.)

I play to a 4.2 handicap. We played from the US Open tee markers that made the course par 70, instead of 71. This was by far the hardest course that I have ever played. We played the course in "easy conditions", the rough was not as thick as it usually is and they cut down the knee high fescue that surrounds the course. The course also wasn't in great condition because of the heat-wave. They were watering the greens every chance they got, and we had to dodge some sprinklers when hitting shots.

I didn't play too great, hit some good shots, hit some bad ones. It wasn't a great day to score because it was so hot, and we were tired by the time we reached the first fairway. Counting two mulligans I would have shot 86 (+16), without the mulligans I shot ~90. On the 210 yd par 3 8th hole I hit my tee shot into the lake (only water on the course). I took a drop from about 80 yds, then pitched a sand wedge that landed about 5 ft short of the hole, I yelled "Go in!", and sure enough it dropped. Ho Hum Par... That was about the only exciting hole, the rest were filled with trying to grind out pars. I managed to par the last hole, so it that was nice.

Course Details:

Par: 70
Yards: 7297
Rating: 76.6
Slope: 148

16th hole 479 yard monster plays dead into about a 1.5 club wind

hitting a 6-iron on the 161 yard par 3 14th. also into the 1.5 club wind.

Jason same hole

Vinny same hole.

walking up the 18th

18th Blue Tee box. our tee was about 50 yds behind this.

The first hole.

FYP.

Seriously though, good report, and great pics. I was ready to say this thread is worthless without pics, but that is clearly not the case! One of them is the new background on my desktop here at work.

Very jealous though. Man, the 18th fairway looks like it's a mile away from the tee box on those pics....

I hope its the one of me sticking it to 20 ft.

the 18th actucally is one of the shorter par 4s. only 411 yds. but it goes straight up the hill, so it plays longer.

the 12th was ridiculous. 499 yd par 4 into the wind. and you have to carry it ~260 to get over the bunker to have any shot at the green in 2. I had a 2-iron in, but pulled it into the left trap.

I must be a serious golf nerd, but I can't get enough of pictures of golf courses, especially with 'regular folk' playing them. Nice work!
