People do it because the games are very soft, and there is no legal no limit poker in Florida, except on the boats. It is absolutely insane at the games though. You'll win a pot that should have $1850 in it, and get back $1725. Most people never even notice it seems,

"In the games around Orlando, the rake for most games is 10% up to $5, and $1 for each additional $50 with no cap. "

$1850/50 should be $36 +5 (horrible enough) and they take out a buck-twenty-five? How do I move down to Florida and mint THAT gold mine from the idiots?

I'd be committing bloody murder

Fixed your post. Shouldn't 125 get them .44 here?

I can only tell you that it is illegal in California to take a rake or sitting fee for any home poker game. 100% of the money taken into play must then be paid out to the players who earn it. That is of course if you wish to remain within the law. You probably read about the LA poker game that got busted because it was taken a rake.

Two of my regular players were at that game that got busted. The Police said they only busted it because of the rake. The players got off with a slap on the wrist, but nobody has heard from the host since. They confiscated all his supplies, etc.

I think it depends on what the game is offering really. If its some scummy place with a cheap, dirty table, bad lighting, and bad chairs with no perks, I wouldn't be willing to pay much rake unless the game was extremely fishy. Basically the better the atmosphere, the more I am willing to concede to the house, but if a game is really profitable I am willing to (and have) payed insane rakes. The going rate in Orlando is 10% up to 5$, plus 1 more for each 50 dollars as the fellow above stated. I too have heard though of certain guys taking large sums out of massive pots without even mentioning it to the players - be careful and watch the dealer.

Exactly. The dealers know who counts the pots, and who doesn't. Sometimes they go by their standard structure, but when the pot winner is someone who wouldn't know the difference, they hijack the pot, instantly removing easily attainable chips from the table.

Yes, check your local laws. It's illegal here in Ohio too.

If you take a rake, then you are the same entity as a casino. Now if you provide drinks, chips, etc with the money from the rake, that might get you into a gray area of the house not actually making a profit, but you would probably rather to be safe than sorry.

Usually two dollars, max four is the same rake as the Taj in AC, def not worth it for a home game. Tell this guy to shove it.

Good luck,
Matt

I used to live in Orlando and now live in St. Petersburg. I am desperately looking for a good home game but I refuse to pay that much in rake. I agree that there should be no rake in a home game. There is nothing wrong with asking for five or 10 bucks to help with refreshments though.
