It's the SERVICE industry, provide BAD service, get no TIP. Luckily, this doesn't happen very often. Dealers figure out fast that rude = po at the end of the day.

[/ QUOTE ]

That's one way we can tell you deal in Vegas instead of the damned midwest riverboats, where the dealers pool their tokes. Toking or not transmits almost no information to these dealers, since your toke or non-toke is effectively diluted by every other player and dealer in the entire room. I can tell after one hand the dealers who take pride in their work and the ones who just can't wait to deal as few hands as possible before they waddle their stupid asses home, and I have no way to communicate in a serious way that I prefer the former to the latter.

Ugh. I agree with everyone else that that dealer is an ass. Reminds me of one time when a friend and I were ordering a pizza. We had decided in advance that since he owed me money, I would get the tip. So my friend gives the pizza guy the minimum in cash he can and still cover the pizza and says "keep it" just as I start pulling money out of my wallet.

Pizza guy: "What? Is that all?"
Me: (holding several dollars in my hand) "It is now."

Then I take the pizza, close the door and put my money back. I just can't see an excuse for that kind of crack, ever.

You know you might end up with an extra topping on your next delivered pizza right?

I have never seen 50cent pieces at MGM Grand. Perhaps she is not allowed to accept the coins from other casinos.

[/ QUOTE ]

A 50-cent piece is not from other casinos, it is from the US Government. I could be wrong, but I think most casinos accept US currency.

I often thank the dealer when he/she pushes me a pot, expecially if it is a monster!

[/ QUOTE ]

Ditto!

And if it is a monster >$1000 they generally get a red or two pushed back them.

Here is my general tipping schedule, with variance for poor and great dealers.

Blind steals, $0
<$100, $1
>$100 <$500, $2
>$500 <$1000, $5 or $7
>$1000... $10 or more equaling about 10% of the pot.

So when you look at this... Do you tip 10% or 20% for a good dinner? I do, because I remember what it was like to work for minium wage or less and have tips make up the majority of my income.

Remember the dealer needs to be your friend, they enforce the rules that need to be enforced that if you said anything would piss off the fish. They make the extra effort to protect your cards when you make a big bluff and muck and the nit wants to see your cards. They keep the WPT wannbees from slowing the game down too much. They make sure the pot is correct and not shorted. They can turn a angry table into a laughing one in 30 mins or less.

Yeah, your tipping pattern seems a little whacky - best to do the $1/decent sized pot - but a dealer should never make a comment like that no matter what.

I played at the Trump Indiana tonight, my first casino experience. I was nervous at first, but I settled in quick. The only issue I ran into was in regards with tipping. I know that there have been quite a few threads on this issue lately but I have not heard anything in this area.

I was playing 2/5 200 Max NL. I had no real tipping strategy going in, just thought I would get a good feel for it. Well in my first half hour I won three pots. The first one was I picked up on the turn and I didn't tip. The next two I won with a showdown and I tipped $5 both times. They all were pots ranging from $50 to $80.

Then I was moved to a different table and didn't have a hand for about an hour. Then on one hand I was able to pick up the pot on the flop after I re-raised a guy pretty big. I didn't tip. 15 minutes later I won a big one, flipped a $5 chip towards the dealer, and she seemed confused and asked "This for me? I didn't know cuz you stiffed me last time." I kinda was surprised by the comment and I didn't respond.

A few hours later I won a pot without showdown, didn't tip. Next hand I won at the showdown and threw in the $5. Dealer asked if I needed it changed. When I said it was for her she was extremely grateful, almost surprised that I tipped a whole five dollars.

All three paragraphs were different dealers. Is this normal? Do some dealers just expect to be tipped every pot while some truly see it as an honor? I mean they all split them up between them anyways, so why the sass from that dealer?

[/ QUOTE ]

u tipped 5 dollars a pot twice are u high? OMG thats gonna be murder on the old hourly rate. Tip a dollar a pot, 2 once and a while if u fell inspired to do so. if u forget to tip a hand tip when the dealer as he or she leaves. BUT NOT 5 dollars ever!

Also ur other questions are dependent on the casino, so u have to talk to someone there.

So, it's not good enough that the dealer does his job well, controls the action and keeps the game moving? You also need to have your ego stroked and be told what a wonderful person you are? I suppose you stop and say "thank you" after each hand you're dealt, right? No, and let me guess why: because you're "entitled" to that hand while tipping is optional.

Yes, the polite thing for a dealer to do is say thanks, but as long as he keeps the game moving and is not overtly rude, I don't care. Sometimes a dealer will forget to stop and thank me because he's too busy shuffling and getting my next hand to me and I'm just fine with that.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yes, I played the hand, it's my pot, I'm the customer and I'll say nothing if I choose.

It's not like they are busting their butt walking from a table to the kitchen all night. They are doing what a trained monkey could easily do. If shuffling is sooo mind-boggling thay they can't say thank you at the same time, then they have a problem

Finally, if all the dealers at a particular casino said nothing, it would be a different story. But if some say thank and some don't then I won't tip the silent ones.

My tipping is pretty standard $1 or $2 usually more with a monster pot. My problem is I honestly forget at times to tip - too busy stacking my chips so I'll make it a point to tip as soon as I can so the dealer (if he or she is doing a decent job) knows I appreciate their work. I also believe it's important to tip the dealer $1 or $2 as I'm racking up and leaving to let them know they're appreciated.

Haven't read all the responses so perhaps this was addressed already:
If you were tipping $5 on a few different hands then what the hell kind of 'feel' were you getting??
Because there certainly weren't any other players doing this.

How hard is it to just observe what the other players do whatever they do?

2 years ago I had never played B&M before either but in my first experience I saw that most players tossed a buck after each pot that they won. "Oh...I guess you're pretty much expected to tip $1 after each pot you win."
(this was news to me as I was familiar with the blackjack world whe

The hands where you didn't tip because you didn't go to showdown: generally not considered to be the relevent criteria.

Bernie's criteria of tipping is pretty much what I do.
$1 when you win a pot over $30...and tipping $2 if you feel like it (that is, i like the dealer too) for a much larger pot.

Although I've been known to tip $1 for pots even smaller than $30 on occasion.

In the B&M newbie guide it was suggested to tip 2% but others of us thought that was a bit steep.

But I'm really surprised that someone would go in there and not figure out that tipping $5 on a hand was exceptionally large when it's extremely easy to see that you're the only one doing it.
Then, the fact that each dealer seemed surprised when you tipped $5 should also be a clue I would think.

Also - The dealer saying 'you stiffed me last time' is really bad form.
I get forgetful sometimes but it's fairly common to ask the dealer a couple hands later, "did i get you on that last hand? I'm drinking and absent-minded." usually it's the old people who have to frequently keep checking with the dealer if they remembered to tip or not.....but I figure that appearing scatter-brained sometimes isn't so bad.
The dealer is typically appreciative that I am trying my best to take care of them.
