In general sets are strong hands and should be played as such. However there are still times given the texture of the board and the action that a set is no longer the probable best hand and should be layed down.

Having said that, I think you played this hand fine. The river probably comes back capped to you anyway as multiple people seemed to catch a piece of that river.

Well that's what I've been reading all over. If you hit a set put as much money in the pot as you can. If you don't lose a lot of money with your set, you're not playing it correctly. Wrong?

[/ QUOTE ]

I think you may be taking this quote too literally.

If there were four clubs on the board and it went bet/raise would you 3-bet and call a cap?

*Edited to avoid any smart-assed confusion.

I would cap it without noticing the possible straight.

I'm sorry are you literally suggesting if your opponent showed you a better hand you should keep raising him because "I have a set therefore I should lose more money"? The concept at hand is the idea that a set is a strong hand, and if it gets beat, it will be costly. It is also meant to suggest you don't play it weakly as it will very frequently be the best hand. But you can't turn off your brain and say "I have a set I'm going to raise every chance I get and if I lose its ok because I read somewhere that I should lose alot of money with sets" that is just insane.

I think that's basically right, but, like all maxims in poker, you strongly need to consider the whole situation before making a decision. There are several situations where, given the board and action, you should fold your set. They are relatively rare in loose micro-limits, but it's always important to think about the concepts behind these phrases, and not just apply them mechanically.

Didn't he say he had no reads against either player. With no reads and the fact that runner runner had to be caught to have the nuts I don't think I'm laying this down if thats what your saying. Now I can understand maybe not capping (i think OP capped). But I feel that many times we are up against two pair rather than the straight! I could be wrong (I just was in a previous post).

I think that in the long run you would be fine to play this the same way. I may not have capped the River but that is about the only thing that I would consider doing differently.

Well definetly if the board is scary I'm gonna adjust and just call it down or fold. Im not talking about capping with your set of 6's on a board with 4 spades on it either.

You also have to consider the action as well as the board.

UTG called/3-bet the river against two players, one of whom has shown quite a bit of aggression, on a board where JT makes the nut hand.

Also remember that many times the SB will fold on the river for two bets when you have him beat, but will almost always call one more.

He's saying just call the river. You're way too much of an underdog to be capping here. Plus, capping forces SB out, whom you're probably ahead of.
