I know I\'m beat but I\'m still raising
PokerStars 0.05/0.10 Hold'em (7 handed) converter
Preflop: Hero is MP2 with K[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], K[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]. Hero posts a blind of $0.05. UTG calls, 1 fold, Hero (poster) raises, 2 folds, SB calls, 1 fold, UTG calls. Flop: (7 SB) 3[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img], 4[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img], 9[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] (3 players) SB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets, SB calls, UTG calls. Turn: (5 BB) K[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] (3 players) SB checks, UTG checks, Hero bets, SB calls, UTG calls. River: (8 BB) Q[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (3 players) SB bets, UTG calls, Hero raises, SB calls, UTG 3-bets, Hero caps, SB calls, UTG calls. Final Pot: 20 BB Fistt hand, no reads. I think it's obvious that I got rivered. I was pretty sure SB or UTG had the straight, but I was trying to lose as much money with my set. Is this gonna hurt me or benefit me in the long run? |

Re: I know I\'m beat but I\'m still raising
I think you played this right. The straight was a backdoor, making it somewhat less likely. I think you're up against two pair or a lower set too often not to cap the river. Especially with SB calling down after his raise - you almost certainly have him beat.

Re: I know I\'m beat but I\'m still raising
The river cap is pretty bad.
This may seem like a silly question, but why were you trying to lose the maximum? Did I miss a memo or something? |

Re: I know I\'m beat but I\'m still raising
The fact that if you are beat and he caught runner runner for a straight you are winning in the long run. I think SB has two pair Q9, and UTG (if not a maniac) caught his runner runner. Your play is correct! You will be payed off in the long run!

Re: I know I\'m beat but I\'m still raising
Well that's what I've been reading all over. If you hit a set put as much money in the pot as you can. If you don't lose a lot of money with your set, you're not playing it correctly. Wrong?

Re: I know I\'m beat but I\'m still raising
I would perhaps have just called the river 3-bet instead of capping. Anyway I would definitely not have folded your set of K's on the river.
Its possible that one of your loose opponents may have been calling all the way with JT for a runner runner straight. But its also possible that they could have been raising with other weaker hands, such as Q9 for 2 pair. |

Re: I know I\'m beat but I\'m still raising
Then you all are throwing away money. I just read the title of the original post and thought "this player is bad". Did you guys all see him call / 3 bet the river? Come on people.
