Alright...since I bothered reading all the posts I hope you'll give my humble opinion a minute of your time. True poker is played live...however I'd bet any NFL player could beat us in any video football game. Same applies to poker...most on-line players simply don't have the knowledge to compete with the best players. However the battle of the best is played live b/c thats the truest and best form. On-line play does serve a purpose...for being a pro its an invaluable tool to win lots of money at faster than that player could do in a live game. Also...as a beginner, I play on-line to mainly to get down my moves and learn the basics b4 I move up to real play...and I have played in a few lives games with mixed results. I enjoy on-line poker b/c it gives me a chance to learn not play k 7 and ace 3 UTG, and j 10s on the button is worth calling a small raise. However, I would say that denegrating on-line players is not right. Some are very good on-line players...some are not...just like in live games. Live poker is better than on-line b/c its takes more psychology into the game but playing on-line is an easy and cheap way to become a much better player.

thank you for your comment, and i somewhat agree. i think playing online or playing live are two totally different things, each has its challenges and its benefits. each can ideally be used for different things (aside of course from winning). my point is i would like to play in a live casino setting every time i play, but i can't afford that. i cant afford it moneywise since limits only go as low as 2/4 and i cant afford it time wise to drive 6 hrs everytime i want to play. i would like to use the online possibilities to emulate a real casino as much as possible. i think there is a lot of prospect in an online poker site in the future being just like a casino. only 1 table at a time! maybe digital pc cams so you can see the other players and get reads on them. i realize this will probably not happen for a few years, but i definately think it would be a big hit. what do you guys think???

horrible analogy with the nfl players/video games thing, as 90% of the people on this site are complete geeks and would win hands down in the video game. but we get the point and mostly i agree with you.

If you don not want ot invest more than $50 at one time, I suggest not playing for real money for a few weeks or months, and then invest the amount of money that you would have normally used up to that time, i.e. $50/week,wait 4 weeks and then invest $200. The reason for this is that if you play in a cash game and have thin pockets, then you won;t be able top bounce back from some tough losses. With $200 at the table you don't have to worry about losing $50.

If you think playing Internet poker is bad because people play bad cards, clearly you're not playing poker for the money. Or you are, and don't know what you're doing.
(before the ad hominem's start, I play both live and online and am doing rather well at both, thank you) |

As an adventurer on ridiculously low income (less than 1.5k/month from my day job after taxes), I must give the opposite advice. There's nothing wrong with playing underbankrolled if you already plan to replenish your bankroll, as long as you SAVE THE MONEY YOU WIN as soon as you hit a good week. I've gone broke several times in the last year, but it was due to the "I need more furniture for my apartment" leak rather than bad play or even a bad run of cards. Eventually you hit a rush, then now that you have a semi-bankroll you keep pumping money into it until it becomes a real bankroll.
The problem with saving up for a bankroll is that you don't play while you are building it. Getting rusty and out-of-practice is -EV, while playing underbankrolled in a situation where the alternative is not playing at all, is simply +variance. |

and i've deposited the minimum $50 a handful of times, and cashed out with $50 once or twice when i got fed up with it. [/ QUOTE ] Your problem isn't bankroll management. If you've lost over 150BB in total at the limit games, then the problem is more likely with your play. At the risk of arousing this threads' troll, I will announce that I've turned my initial $50 into over $4000 in about a year. I started playing .10/.20 at Prima. It can be done, but you have to play well. Having a short bankroll will cause many players to play too tight, and too scared, and that's not what poker is about. I've also heard that the live games are much looser than the internet games, but the internet games are still very beatable. I'd recommend playing somewhere where $50 will last you awhile. Something like .5/.10 would be good. Move up each limit when you have 400-600BB for that limit. Plan. Keep records. Be honest with yourself. |
