LOL that's hillarious! I did a google on the name, and a ton of Mr. Dikshits came up. I had no idea that was a common last name. Thanks for the replies, guys, any other input would be greatly appreciated on the topic of getting a foot in the door.

Do dealers get benefits (insurance, etc) ? I play quite a bit in Tunica, and have wondered about feasability of playing full-time. I have a good job outside of casino business - I'm not seriously considering leaving that anytime soon, but if for some reason in the future my situation changes, I'm intrigued by the possibilty of getting apartment close to casinos (or lving in hotel at Gold Strike poker rate) and just playing poker. The problem with that is the cost of medical insurance, no employment for credit applications, rental agreements, etc. But those problems would be resolved (provided those jobs also include benefits) if I became a dealer or for that matter a casino employee in any form. It would also provide a source of guaranteed income. Even if I work 40 hours, since I would be living right there, still plenty of time to play poker. Any thoughts on that? Is there anybody out there who is doing that now? Thanks

d00d at this point just call up a casino and ask them what benefits a dealer and/or floor manager receive.

searching on the net gave me this:

MGM Mirage properties (I'm presuming they're offer full health coverage (medical, dental, vision, EAP), life and disability insurance, PTO, 401k, and education assistance. I think this is for hotel employees, tho, not casino employees.

Harrah's offers a 401k but I couldn't find mention of health benefits (doesn't mean it's not there, but if they have it I'm surprised that they didn't mention it).

The Caesars empire (www.caesarsjobs.com) has medical, dental, vision, 401k, and other standard assorted job benefits.

I also tried the Station properties but couldn't find meaty info on the web, and I couldn't find a number to call that wasn't guest relations.

EDIT: yeah I realize those are mostly strip casinos but I thought they'd be the most likely to have info on the web, and hopefully the industry is competetive such that you'd get similar benefits in Tunica or wherever.

Most naval officer take paycuts when they get out of the service. It's all about the cost of doing something you like/love vs. staying in a semi-decent paying job but working 24/7 in a living hell. Most dealers make about $50,000/yr They get paid minimum wage + tips which is about $30 bucks an hour on tips alone (avg 30 hands an hour). My intention is not to be a dealer (although it would not be to much of a pay cut) but to work my way up to card room manager, which in some casinos is a 6 figure job.

I know this is going to piss you off and probably shouldnt say it, but I cant help myself.

Life a Naval officer is a 24/7 living hell? You have got to be kidding.

1) Youre an officer. Whens the last time you got your hands dirty?
2) Youre in the Navy. Whens the last time you fired a weapon or been shot at?

Try spending several years as an enlisted man in the Army. As someone who did just that, I most certainly appreciate your service to our country, but Im a little offended by your charactorization of your life, especially knowing what I did when I was in the Army, what I know some of my friends are doing right now....and what I know about the Navy and military officers in general.

Again, I respect you for what you do, but a "living hell?" Give me a break.

If you or your unit has been reassigned to escort duty in Iraq, then I take back everything I just said. But if youre on a ship or some other safe place like the Pentagon.....

As I respect what you and any service member does in any branch. Try not to take everything you read so literally. 90% of americans classify their jobs as a living hell. I never said my job was more painful than anyone else. Does life suck most of the time underway on a ship, hell yes. All I'm doing is leaving the service as most do and finding a line of work I will love and not classify as a living hell.

If 90% of Americans classify their jobs as living hell (which I dont believe), then how do you plan on being lucky enough to find a job you love?

You think you'll love running a cardroom? Im sure it would be fun for a while, then it would become boring and unfulfilling very quickly like most other jobs. I doubt it would be hell though

Good luck. I hope you find what youre looking for.

This is something I have been considering doing as well. I currently work in IT and it is becoming a very high burnout job for me... so I am looking to make a change. I would love to play Poker full-time, but the wife won't accept a career without benefits and a regular income source. So it is a happy medium, income, benefits, and close to the poker room to keep working on my game.

So if you get any good info, let me know. I was planning to find a casino I liked (or area she likes), then call them when the time came to go to an approved dealer school or their local dealerschool for that casino.

Anyone know what the "promotion time" is to go from Dealer to Floor to supervisor to manager? My ideal "career" would be Poker Room Manager at a casino, but I know that takes some time to get to (I have a bachelor's in business, 10 years of management experience, and a good history of working with large numbers of employees and customers. So I have the resume for it once I get the time in on the floor/dealing).
