Default stupid computer question

I get to my hotel in vegas, and turn on my laptop. just for grins, I run a site survey on the wireless card. there are several signals, from around 40% to over 80%. I go ahead and connect to the strongest one.

where is this signal coming from? any reason I shouldn't connect to it? how far do these signals travel?

I've been using it for 3 days. it's ok, but not real fast.

Most likely it's coming from your hotel... most hotels offer free wireless now. Signals don't travel far so I doubt you're tapped into somewhere else, especially with that strong of a signal.
