Calling with second Nut Low
Hi,
I'm new to this forum. I've been playing Omaha hi/lo 0.50/$1 and having a good time learning the game. One situation I don't understand: Is it normally correct to call with the second nut low, or should you normally fold this? Here is an example: On the turn, I have the 2nd nut, and there is a bet, a call, and a raise. Should I fold here? What about on the river? Thanks, Jonathan __________________________________________________ _____ ***** Hand History for Game 2330110702 ***** $0.5/$1 Omaha Hi/Lo - Friday, July 08, 13:19:47 EDT 2005 Table Table 25414 (Real Money) Seat 6 is the button Total number of players : 9 Seat 6: rd711 ( $33.88 ) Seat 9: Hero ( $11.74 ) Seat 5: bogie1 ( $4.5 ) Seat 3: Betsythebets ( $30.76 ) Seat 2: Big_Slick_WV ( $22.75 ) Seat 4: Airglo ( $28.75 ) Seat 7: Xuxeur ( $5.5 ) Seat 10: firechief1 ( $31.5 ) Seat 1: garyw321 ( $22.75 ) Xuxeur posts small blind [$0.25]. Re: Calling with second Nut Low
Jonathan,
depending on the number of opponents you have, you should almost never call on the turn with the second nut low unless you have prospects for high (set, wrap draw, nut flush draw). drawing to the second nut low is the biggest money burner in O8. in the hand you posted, with a bet, call, and a raise, the action sends your cards into the muck immediately. furthermore, when there are three cards to the wheel on board, someone will almost always have it. as an aside, your hand is terrible preflop. throw it away. good luck. enjoy the game. it's really fun. respectfully, temp |

Re: Calling with second Nut Low
I would just fold there. You have absolutely no high, a bet and raise, and still have two others to act behind you. Just not worth it to "maybe" win half the pot.

Re: Calling with second Nut Low
Easy fold on the turn. If you mis-clicked the turn, easy fold on the river.
To call with the second nuts you MUST have at least some and preferably all of the following: 1) a large pot where you are getting goods odds if you’re wrong 2) chances to win if your read is incorrect. If you’d had top set on a potential straight board or nutflush etc. then you have ways to win if you are wrong 3) A second nut holding in circumstances where the nut holding is relatively rare. Here the nut holding is A3 and many people will play any A3 hand. If the board was A23 and you held 46 then I might call since the low that beats you is 45 and somewhat rare. 4) A tolerance for variance --Greg |

Re: Calling with second Nut Low
I was going to say the same thing about not playing the hand to begin with, but he was in the bb.

Re: Calling with second Nut Low
Jonathan,
The other boys have it right as usual. When there are a lot of low cards on the board...as in this case, your low cards better include cards that are 5 or less or don't even give calling a thought. Dave |

Re: Calling with second Nut Low
Drawing to the 2nd nut low is the biggest drain on your bankroll. Nuff said.

Drawing to the 2nd nut low is the biggest drain on your bankroll. Nuff said. [/ QUOTE ] The problem is that in this case I was never drawing to the second nut low. I was in the BB and saw the flop for free, and then the flop got checked around so I saw the turn for free. So I was "presented" with the 2nd nut low and never drew to it. Thanks everyone for the responses. It seems like there is unanimity on how to play this one! Suerte, Jonathan |
