Banter is good, as long as it does not offend anybody too terribly, and you do not converse with a guy that is in the middle of a hand. It passes the time quicker and I've seen it keep losing players around longer, so I think it is probably +EV.

At a low limit game, very very few people make enough money to cover expenses (i.e., hotel room, meals, etc.), so most people are playing for fun.

I think it's very +ev to keep anyone who's playing to have fun happy.

As to the old guy -- if you weren't being loud and obnoxious, I'd ignore him. Maybe you'll get lucky and he'll go on tilt.

Not quite on topic, but a funny story:

I was playing at the Bellagio and we got a female dealer at a dealer-change. First hand, a nice guy in his late 20s loses a hand and says "Aw, crap." This old guy perks up and yells "Hey! You can't say stuff like that! There's a lady present!"

The guy apologizes, and we play till the next dealer-change. At that point, the old man says "Ok, now we can talk about masturbating dogs, and sh[/i]it." The younger guy, of course, says "Why would we want to talk about THAT?"

The old man responded "I don't know. But we could if we wanted to."

I always thought that the old guys were just passing time playing low limit. As a result the would enjoy sitting chatting. I mean we were sitting talking about sports and ect easy stuff that men playing poker could appreciate or seemingly so.

I think you can chat all you want to your friends. I get annoyed when people feel they need to have an ONGOING conversation with the entire table. Then, STFU. The other annoyance is when people beside me want to tell me how they folded 96o when a 9 and 6 is flopped. Or how their 23o would have been the winning hand by making a straight. Blah, blah blah.

Friendly old people are the most +EV players everrrrrrrrr.

My story time...

I actualy got warned by the dealer for talking once. I was playing the 1-5 stud game at turning stone where the average age is ~165 years old. I'm usually the only one not collecting social security in that game. So I chat it up big time with the old guys, because they like talking about their grandkids and my college experiences and such. It's fun and +EV.

Anyway, this TStone regular who is really skeevy looking (I think his name is Dino) is sitting on my left and getting annoyed with my friendly chit chat. He is also re-raising me on 3rd street every time I raise, and you never see a re-raise on 3rd street in that game. So we get into a raising war in a hand, and after he caps it on 5th street, I stare directly at him and say "you really hate me, don't you." The dealer didn't think it was amusing, and basically told me keep quiet.

By the way I won the hand with kings up. The pot was about $130.

"you really hate me, don't you?"

I hope it is okay if I steal this, I will pull it out the next time a good friend or a regular player that I know well reraises me on the turn. Results to follow.
