Online Limit HE\'s effects on my NL Draw play
I've played no limit 5-draw regularly for about the last 5-6 years, predominantly home games with a few different groups. For the large part I've been very happy with my play, tight-aggressive and beating the games regularly.
I have started to play Limit Holdem online about 4 months ago, and have concentrated on developing my skills on this game, and I'm making steady progress. After giving a break for 3 months, I played 3 sessions of NL 5-draw, and I saw that my play has changed drastically for the worst. I first thought that I just was not bluffing enough, but after some evaluation I realised that I was playing totally weak-tight instead of my normal tight-aggressive play. By the way, I haven't noticed any deterioration in my card reasing skill, spotting both physical tells and betting patterns, and also the mechanics of my play are still the same, i.e. the starting hands, my draw decisions etc. I am wondering if this change could be a result of having concentrated on holdem where much more information is available than 5-draw, and playing limit instead of no-limit; maybe I just can't make the adjustment. Any opinions or suggestions? |

Re: Online Limit HE\'s effects on my NL Draw play
I saw this post a couple days ago and didn't exactly know what to say, but now I think I do.
You're having trouble adjusting to different game structures, different games. I personally don't have much trouble here, but then I have played much in wild and crazy home games, where dealer calls anything they want, including wild cards, limit/no limit etc. It makes it easy for me to change gears between different games. For casino poker, I can play all games offered, but stick to hold'em, NL hold'em, stud, and stud-eight or better 98% of the time. You seem to be stuck in the mentality of one game. Obviously hold'em strategy and tactics don't work for NL draw (one game I'm not especially familiar with). But you have to get past the differences and change gears when you change games. Weak-tight works pretty well for limit hold'em, but obviously not for NL draw. Now of course a good style for NL draw probably won't translate very well into a hold'em game either. It doesn't matter. Just separate the two in your mind. The best advice I can give you is to play hold'em just before your draw game, and just after too, even if just for a few minutes on the internet. Practice changing gears. Also, you might try some NL hold'em, it's a world apart from limit hold'em, and it might translate easier for your styling conflict, thus helping to bridge the gap. Small NL games are readily available on the internet, so your "tuition" won't be too high. I personally don't think that a weak-tight image is worth a darn in a no limit hold'em game RING game(not tourneys, they are different). I like to have a wild image in a NL hold'em ring game, so when I get a big hand, people will call me. (Just remember that it DOES NOT work at all in a limit hold'em ring game to play that way). al |

Re: Online Limit HE\'s effects on my NL Draw play
Thanks Al,
I will give a try to both. I was actually considering the move to NL Holdem as I played all other games NL all my life, but your suggestion confirmed my thoughts. Afterall I guess the limit structure should have a greater effect on aggressiveness. |
