Only quit if you are not enjoying the game anymore. Some people play basketball all there lives but few make it to the NBA, the doesn't mean they stop playing.

Hi Dwayne,
"In many eight-hour sessions I played only five hands. "
You are playing much too tight. This is obvious to any experienced player reading your post. You may have one session out of 100 where you truly pick up 5 playable hands in 8 hours, but if you have "many", you are either experiencing a gross statistical anomaly (I seriously doubt it), or you are incorrectly folding lots of hands.
Just to give you some perspective, a "tight" approach would have you taking the flop with about 15% of your hands. In 8 hours, this works out to 30-64 hands on average. So, many sessions where you played 5 hands = too tight.
If you don't give up poker, you should post a list of your starting requirements in each position (early, middle, late, the blinds) for both raised and unraised pots. Then, perhaps 2+2ers can offer some advice.
My personal guess is that you actually are forgetting some of the hands you played in a session, but it is possible that you are at the fringe of the card distribution graph, so to speak. The skepticism you're getting from us is on this point is due to the extremely low chance that your problem really is bad luck. I wish you well in the future.
