Default Take a shot at the 8/16 game?

So, I normally play 3/6 or 4/8 Kill at the local B&M casino. The games are pretty soft, many people not knowing what they're doing, just wanting to play some hold em, like they've seen on TV. I don't have the records in front of me, but I've made over $1000 playing there this year. Yeah, not much but I spend most of my time playing online.

Anyways, I just got a small bonus check from work today, and thought I might take a shot at the 8/16 kill game later tonight. From what the dealers tell me, the 8/16 game isn't any tougher than the 3/6 game. You just get an extra maniac in the game every now and then. It's more agressive, that's for sure, but other than that, there aren't any really tough players.

There are no delusions of grandeur here. I just want to try to take a shot at a game bigger than I have before, and I think this might be the time to do it.

I just went to vegas and decided to play the 8/16 there. I figured what the hell, I was playing with money from my adequate bankroll, I should at least buy in a couple times and take a shot. I found the quality of play to be around 1/2 party level, maybe worse, and now I can't see myself playing anything lower unless I'm broke.

also, do not underestimate how much better the rake will be in 8/16 as opposed to 3/6.

edit: I am pretty comfortable in the party 3/6 game right now and am most likely a winning 2/4 player, fwiw.

Thanks for sharing. I'm headed to Vegas next week and was considering which level to play. I was there last in December and played mostly 4/8 at the Bellagio. The game was great. This time I was considering to play 8/16 or higher.

At which casino did you play?

Anyone else have any thoughts as to how the Vegas games play at different levels? I know it will certainly vary from table to table and depends solely on the players sitting, but if anyone has played there a lot and has a general idea of how the games compare to Party games I'd be obliged if he/she would share.

Thanks,

-WT

here are the limits I've played
2/4, everywhere - expect to see no one who actually understands poker. avg VPIP of 85% or so. If you raise in EP expect 7-8 cold callers (even though you are a rock). If there are other aggressive players at the table, do not be surprised to see things like 7 way capped flops and 40-50bb pots. Raising the flop in late pos with overs and a BDFD will almost always get you a free river card.

3/6 mgm, mirage - same as 2/4 as far as I can tell.

4/8, bellagio and wynn - only 4-5 cold callers now. This game I think is slightly worse than party .5/1. Expect to see 1-2 other players that are decent and tight.

8/16 - generally tighter and a lot more aggressive. There were usually 3-4 good players and usually only 1-2 donators, and they're usually not reeeally bad. A lot less cold calls. Depending on the table I think these played somewhere between .5/1 and 3/6 on party.

Any other opinions? I'm leaving work in about 2 hours to take a shot at this game. So far, I've convinced myself that this is money to burn. Results later

My limited experience at the Bellagio 15/30 is that is plays about like 2/4 Party and easier in some respects... maybe i've had good cards or better luck but there's definitely gamblers there in the game especially on weekends when there.

I'll be there over Labor Day weekend and have a coaching appt. with a local pro btw...

Good luck. Let us know how it goes. I've been thinking of doing the same. I usually play 4/8 live. Just think of it like a 3/6 game (chip wise) and don't focus on the $ value. Where are you playing?

Oceans 11 in Oceanside, CA (my regular B&M cardroom)

Unfortunately things didn't quite go as planned. I waited 2 hours to get into the 8/16 game. In the meantime, I played 4/8, went +100, got called for a new 8/16 game, only to find out that not enough players were there to start the game, so I went back to the 4/8 game and dropped most of my profit.

When I finally sat in the 8/16 game, I found that there were fewer complete donks. In fact the table was fairly tight. It was somewhat agressive, and while there were occasional 5-6 handed pots, most were contested 3-4 handed with a raise about 50% of the time. Not a problem, I just had to tighten up a little bit.

Unfortunately, I started out by rivering 2 hands. I had AQ UTG+1 (and raised), and got it 3 handed vs. the blinds. I bet all the way on an A37 flop, Q turn but when the Q river came, the SB who stayed in led out. Of course I raised and he called. I showed, he flashed me 33 before mucking. *oops*

The next hand was a 97s steal attempt from CO. I got a button and BB caller. Flop came A86, and I bet, button raised, BB called. I check/called the blank turn and led out on the 7 river (straight). Button had flopped 2 pair. *Yikes!*

Eventually I handed it back when I 3-bet from the button with TT against a known aggressive raiser to my right (he'd be raising hands like QT and the like, so I had no problem 3-betting him). Unfortunately, the table dynamic changed and a legit donk cold called 3 bets with K6s pre-flop. He played well post-flop, catching a King on the turn to beat me, but I probably could have saved 1 bet on the turn from him.

I ended up down a grand total of $27 in 2 hours at the 8/16 game before I had to leave to meet my g/f for dinner. As a result, I still have most of that bonus check and will take another shot at the game, hopefully getting in some hours before seeing if it's too tough for me.

Bottom line, I was NOT intimidated there. I did treat it like a 4/8 game, just with pink chips. I had to tighten up a bit. Twice I threw away small pocket pairs where i had to cold call 3 bets pre-flop. Both times I would have flopped sets. Once, I would have been up against a bigger set (with KK), the other time was when donktard 3-bet with 44 and I would have won. Oh well. Maybe it was a good raise with 44 to isolate, but I didn't think he was that good.

I look forward to the next game.

Hey Jedi...

Good luck to you man. I usually play 3/6 at Commerce, I'm trying to grind out a 1g roll to take a shot at the 9/18 game because I've heard it's exceptionally good. Of course, then again, pretty much every game at Commerce is good. Anyways, stick with it, I'm sure you'll do fine. Any game where somebody cold calls 3bet with K6s is a good game in my book
