Re: This is ridiculous.
[ QUOTE ]
5000 is the expected wrong answer and 4100 is the real answer. [/ QUOTE ] I just think there is no way 98% of people (or even anywhere close to that) get 5000 over 4100. I'm no math genius or quizmaster and this was a quick 4100. I think there may be another trick answer, because the whole explanation seems wrong. |

I think there may be another trick answer, because the whole explanation seems wrong. [/ QUOTE ] Huh? I think that it's just because when people read through the question quickly, they mistakenly read 10, 20, 30 and 40 as 100, 200, 300 and 400 to come up with a nice round answer at the end, instead of the awkward 4100 answer. |

[/ QUOTE ] Well, I agree that 98% just seems like a stupid statistic, but I'd bet it's much higher than you'd think. Someone asked me this question verbally maybe 10 years ago, and I remember saying 5000, and I'm very good at math. Actually, I'm only decent at arithmetic, but that's beside the point. If you take on this question not giving it much concentration, it would be easy to flub. I also think that giving it to someone verbally makes a difference too. Oh yeah, and most people are really dumb. I wouldn't be surprised if a good percent came up with a number beside 4100 or 5000 just cuz they can't add. |

Re: This is ridiculous.
I guess. I get the feeling that a lot of people lied in saying they got 4100 then? OP shouldn't have given the answer right away to make a point then. Everyone saying it was easy along with me getting 4100 (again no math genius just lucky) made me think that we are getting duped.

Re: This is ridiculous.
Well, chances are that you also have to take into account the fact that most people on this board are probably more mathematically inclined than the general population.

Re: This is ridiculous.
I don't know how anybody could get 5000.
Maybe it shows that most people just skim instead of read. I wouldn't be surprised at all. It seems to be borne out conversationally. |
