In the mind of the Donk
Schoonmaker talks about getting to know the different types of opponents to understand why things make sense to them. So, I see this play quite a bit from donks, and I'm trying to figure out why this makes sense to them. Here's what I see a lot of:
I have something like KK and raise PF after they've already called with trash, they call for 1 more. The flop gives them something like an OESD. They check, I bet, they call. The turn gives them the nuts. They check, I bet, they call. The river comes and they bet. What are they thinking? |

Re: In the mind of the Donk
That you'll reraise them and they'll get there precious 3 bets in. I see plays like this all the time. Such as after betting a large chunk on the turn, they will come out and lead for minimum (this of course in NL) on the flop. Sometimes they have nothing, some times they have the nuts. I've seen it work alright at times, they get to see your cards pretty cheaply. It's a donk, don't worry about what a Donk does, they are giving you a cheap river if you just call, because odds are you were going to bet anyway.

Re: In the mind of the Donk
That you'll fold the turn if they bet? This way they've extracted two bets from you. I've seen it too except the guy called my raise with rag rag unsuited and made two pair on the turn.

Re: In the mind of the Donk
This happened to me at the Borg. A guy called my raise PF with J7o and flopped top pair, turned trips, then lost on the river when I filled up.
Had he c/r'ed the turn, he would have won a nice pot, instead I won a monster. |

Re: In the mind of the Donk
Flop they're on a draw, no way they want to raise with no hand, are you crazy? Turn they hit a monster, any kook will knows you must slowplay monsters until the very last moment. River bet/3-bet because they think that you'll think you're stealing the pot. 2nd level thinking yo!

Gee I hope I win! This is soooo exciting!" The real bad ones aren't even sure they have the nuts or when they do, they just call the turn because they're fearful of the river card cracking their nuts. Only when they see with their own eyes that they are safe, do they bet. This is right in line with the calling down they do, since all of that kind of behavior requires explicit ignorance of pot odds calculations. Even when they lose, they'll say things like "hey, I would have spent the same amount of money in a bar drinking, and this is much more fun than that." |

Re: In the mind of the Donk
I've seen this play a lot and always wondered the same thing. Best I can figure it's one of two things: either a really misguided attempt to slowplay, or the donk gets nervous and freezes up the turn (maybe he's not even sure yet if he actually made the straight), then on the river he figures out that he has a really strong hand, so he bets it.
