Default From one blind to two?

Watching and reading about HE games from the 80's and earlier, I noticed that the structure of the game used to be different.

It seems there used to be just one blind and antes from all players before each hand.

Does anyone know the story of how/when/why this changed? I'm just curious because IMO this is a pretty big change in the game.

Yea it's in supersystem but i dont remember off the top of my head. In a lot of tournaments, they still make every player ante from the beginning.
