There are straight draws here. You want people to go away, or at least have to pay. If you bet, you'll likely get raised putting pressure on the others in the pot and likely making their calls unprofitable.

You don't want the donks out if you don't have the best hand. Thus the question is how often do you get raised by a worse hand?

I think this way on looking at things is making them far more simplistic than they really are.
