Default New computer system gloat

I have had my new computer about a week. While I've been around computers for a few years, I'm basicly a N00b in this area.

My sister has a computer guy she trusts and she does know computers. I told him what it was for, and the programs that seem to suck the energy out of my present system, PT mostly plus the Party client programs. Told him I planned to run dual monitors(he got me TWO 6800 gt vid cards) so I was a little miffed until I saw the four monitor setup in a recent thread. OMFG, is all I could think when I realized that I only need 3 more Dell 2001's and that's mine too. No longer miffed.

The computer guy had it setup in his show room for a day to show off, took pixs and everything. He said it did 9000 out of the box with no tweeking on some test. I have no idea what this means, but the way he was going on it sound real good.

System:

AMD 3500+ath64 newcastle(i have no idea what this last part is)
asus a8n sli mb(completely clueless)
corsair 512x2 ddr400 ultra(I think this is RAM, but I like anything with the word ultra in it. It's like buying poker books for "advanced" players)
enermax 600 watt 2ps(this I understand. MORE F"ING POWER)
WD 250gb sata 7200hd(oh yeah)
cooler master case(ports, ports, and more USB ports, I really love this case, it throws heat off like a MF, but it has space for all kind of upgrades)

I feel like an 18 year-older that wins a Ferrari on a game show, but can't drive a stick.

Price tag:

$3200

Gloating at the Zoo:

Priceless

Sorry to take the wind out of your sail, but this is my new rig All the parts should be here early next week. :

Case: Antec SLK3000B Black
CPU: Athlon64 4000+
Motherboard: DFI Lanparty UT NF4 SLI-D PCI-E
Video Card: 2x MSI 6800 Ultras
Hard drive: 2x Raptor 10k RPM (Raid 0)
Power Supply: OCZ Powerstream 600W
Ram: Kingston 400mhz DDR NO-ECC [2Gig kit]
Monitor: Dell 2405FPW (24'' widescreen LCD)

Added a Zalman heatsink and an extra 120mm Vantec stealth fan on the front. I suggest you do the same, we both have high-end machines and extra cooling is always good.

Price: Around 3500$ US (It would have been less, but a lot of the parts had to ordered from the US, and thus will be subjected to customs/shipping fees)

EDIT: And I believe the score of 9000 was in 3dMark03, it's a benchmarking tool, 9000 is a good score.

That's a pretty nice $1500-$2000 computer there. How much did you say you paid for it?

(Oh, why only a gig of ram?)

If he had built it himself, sure, but obviously he doesn't have the know-how. It'd be stupid to risk damaging expensive top-of-the-line PC parts trying to assemble it yourself with no experience. It's better to play around with a cheapo PC and figure out what everything does and where it goes first.

If you've got the budget for a store-assembled custom PC, then why not?

AMD 3500+ath64 newcastle<-- get a Venice core( not newCastle) - 285 us

-asus a8n sli mb<-- I don't know about the SLI, unless you feel like doing major stuff on video. I plan to get a DFI lanparty UT nf4 = 120 us

-corsair 512x2 ddr400 ultra <-- this is ok, pay no more than 120 us

-enermax 600 watt 2ps <-- wow! shiit load of power , no more than 100-130 us.

-WD 250gb sata 7200hd<-- good, throw a good 180 here ( maybe less i am less informed about HD)

"(he got me TWO 6800 gt vid cards)" wow he really ripped you off if you do not plan on making stuff that required heavy video. You payed like 900 us for that. You can get two good ( not great ) video card to multi monitor for 150 buck lol.

so, 285+120+120+130+180+100+ ( other stuff =~100-150)= 1100 us.

Looks like way too much power for online poker. The guy who built your computer did not build according to your needs--sli mobo and two graphics cards when you're not a gamer? You would have noticed no difference with 1 6600GT instead of 2 6800GTs. Waste of money. Also, there is NO WAY this computer should have cost $3200 even with the parts he included.

Sorry to piss on your parade. I'm sure the computer is very fast.

I agree with Izenra, for the things you need it for, it IS overkill, but really who cares if you've got the cash to spare.

I intend on playing poker and games, so this monster will help me get some great framerates running at the 2405FPW's native resolution with all the settings maxxed.

Please tell me you plan on playing games with this and are not just using it to play poker. I think you got ripped off majorly if not.

The funniest thing: "I told him I have two monitors so he put two 6800 gt's in". You DONT need two video cards for a dual display, I'm pretty every 6800 gt has dual ports.

Also, a case that "throws off a lot of heat" shouldn't be mentioned like it's a bad thing. More heat coming out of the computer, less heat inside the computer.

This is probably referring to 3DMark05. This is a really wicked score. Your gonna get a totally rad FPS on True Poker!!!

Yes, I believe the 6800GT has dual-DVI inputs.
