Re: Did I overplay 88?
[ QUOTE ]
OTOH I will be able to trap a lot of players by raising the PFR when I have hit a set. [/ QUOTE ] This is the main reasonn. You will be able to make up a lot of bets postflop when you hit and you will rarely put in any when you miss. |

[/ QUOTE ] Coldcalling J [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]7 [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] from EP is worse than BOTH of these, by A LOT. (assuming you always do it with that hand, and similar hands) |

Re: Did I overplay 88?
OMG, No, But I like I said in my question and response, I knew it was a fold, but I do crazy things like that occasionally especially when I am having a winning session and things are going my way....

Anyone else like the check/call mode post flop? [/ QUOTE ] The problem with this, is that even when your hand is best, its really vulnerable. Someone with, say, TJ has 6 outs (plus BD straight potential)... so, you really need to give him a reason to make a fold. |

Re: Did I overplay 88?
Well, the UTG raiser could have an over pair, a queen or an over card or two.
A raise here isn't terrible, if you think there is a chance UTG has over cards and you want to protect your pair vs. the other callers, then a raise is ok. A better situation to raise with a hand like this would be if you had a good chance to get it heads up with your raise, but since CO called the flop bet here, that is unlikely. After the flop 3-bet and the lingering BB here (who could be on a flush draw, slow playing the queen, or has the queen but is worried about his kicker), your hand is likely not the best and you are drawing to two outs at best. Fold. So you could certainly find a fold on the flop, but the line you took isn't bad either. |

Re: Did I overplay 88?
The raise on the flop allows me to find out whether or not I'm behind before I have to put in 2 big bets. Since BB cold called and UTG 3-bet, I was certain I was beat, and it's an easy fold on the turn UI.
A more tricky villian may have smooth called and popped me on the turn as it turns out he had AQ. |
