That's probably true. I saw him playing 10-20 at the Mirage a few weeks ago.

He was in a $100 weekend tournament at at the Taj about a month ago.

This is what Dynasty is referring to.

Not big money, but I think a lot of pro's were at this event. (Which is really what matters, right?)

He also played a small event at Foxwoods (I think) before the 2003WSOP, and I thought he made the money (it was shown on the Poker Kings documentary.)

Robert didn't get into the main event for $50 bucks, there was nothing that special about his story, his tournament win was not widely watched, and he is a big dork.

I wonder if Robert Varkonyi sends John Shipley a Christmas card every year?

In defence of robert varkonyi, did he put a guy all in with a pair of 8s and the other guy had aces, only to hit the miracle 8 on the turn? what about hit a miracle ace on the river to beat a full house?

You might say Varkonyi is no good based on his lucky final table hands, but moneymaker had to have miracles to even get to the final table! one guy has luck in the final table, the other guy had to have miracles to even get there.

He still gets to go to bed every night knowing that he's a World Champion of Poker.

Let me break it down to you all:

In order to win an event like the main championship you have to get lucky at some point. The fact that Varkonyi got some good cards at the final table doesn't make a difference.

The reason nobody likes Varkonyi is that nobody can identify with him. He is the antithesis of what viewers see when they think "poker player".

He is not T.J. Cloutier, he is not Phil Hellmuth, he is not Phil Ivey.

He's a short guy from the Bronx with a nasally voice and a meekish disposition. That is why he has that image in the poker world.

I played against him recently in 10/20 in Borgata. He said he only plays once a month in a casino. His wife had forced him to go that day too.
