Legal to host a poker tournament in New York City??
Hi everyone,
I am wondering about the legal aspect of hosting a tournament in NYC. If I were to rent a commercial room of some sort and host a tournament , like a No-Limit Holdem tournament of 1000+50 or something of the like, would that be legal?? I realise that live action is definately illegal, but what about a tournament?? It seems as though it should be treated as any other competition, such as chess. Is anyone out there that has this knowledge, or knows where I can get it? Thanks in advance Leonardo |

You will need to talk to a New York attorney who is knowledgeable in this area to have confidence in the answer.
Having said that, I'm confident enough that it is illegal that I would bet you while giving 10:1. Later, Greg Raymer (FossilMan) |

FWIW, I asked up here in Ontario and was told it might be legal without a casino license. Its kind of hazy because things like bridge, chess tournaments for money are legal, however poker might be covered under the gambling statutes.

If you have bingo in your particular local jurisdiction then you might be able to get a church license number and hold a poker tournament.
Thas what they do around here. |
