Guy flips his hand onto the board -- winner is mucked...
I've never actually seen this enforced before, but a very irritating and drunk guy sits down and starts riling everyone up.
Made the game great, but this guy was irritating and unfortunately was sitting next to me. So he was warned at least once about throwing his cards onto the board, which made it not so surprising when he leaps up and flings his cards from seat 7, the slid across the table and landed on the board. He had a set of 5s and one of the regulars had a pair of 2s. The regular called the hand dead, the dealer called the floor and the floor mucked the guy's set. He was pissed and left after a tirade. Anyone seen this enforced before? |

I've seen it enforced before in a similar situation. Most dealers don't enforce it unless a player calls for it. I'm personally not going to try to pick up a pot on a technicality like that, but I will warn the player about it after the hand is over. Most people have no idea that their hand can be killed by throwing it onto the board. The one time I've seen this enforced I thought security was going to have to take this guy down. He was a little steamed.

In my opinion anyone who tries to win a pot with the worst hand at showdown is a nit.

Re: Guy flips his hand onto the board -- winner is mucked...
I was playing at the Taj on Monday and called a large bet on the river with 2nd pair because I thought the bettor was bluffing. I showed my pair and he mucked. A player that was not even in the hand asked to see the cards. The cards were not actually in the muck yet so the dealer turned them over and revealed that the bluffer actually had made a straight on the river. Lucky for me the dealer only flashed the cards quickly before mixing them to shuffle. I told the player that requested to see the cards to think better of it next time. I have seen this type of situation turn ugly before.

I once saw a guy show his set that beat the two pair he was up against and then mucked it face down (knowing that he had the better hand). The dealer awarded the pot to the two pair. The floor was called and he said that the pot belonged to the two pair because the other player had in fact mucked. Tough break.

Lucky for me the dealer only flashed the cards quickly before mixing them to shuffle. [/ QUOTE ] from robert's rules: "If a player other than the pot winner asks to see a hand that has been folded, that hand is dead." I think you had nothing to worry about here, straight or no straight the hand is dead. TT [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] |

Most people have no idea that their hand can be killed by throwing it onto the board. [/ QUOTE ] I am not sure where you are playing that it can be. It is rude and it can be dead of the cards are mixed to where it is unclear what there hand was, but this is not a standard rule and I would not play someplace that allows nits to win with the second best hand at showdown. With the number of people working in poker that are unfamiliar with the rules and procedures it does not suprise me that much that there is some game out there someplace that kills clear winners to give someone else the pot. |

In this situation, at least where I've played, the dealer taps the cards on the muck, killing the hand before showing the cards.

[/ QUOTE ] The "standard rule" is that the hand is dead even if the dealer does not 'tap the cards on the muck'. Conversely, if the 'winner' asks to see the hand, and the dealer 'taps the cards on the muck', the hand is not dead. |
