Default When to start pushing?

What percentage of my stack do the blinds need to be in a MTT for me to start desperately looking for a place to push preflop?

I usually start when I get 8-10BBs.

The key word you used is "desperately". I will "desperately" push when I'm down to around 5XBB. I will usually push with around 10XBB if I decide to play the hand. The difference is when I have a few more chips I'll take my time and try to find a decent hand to play. These are just general guidelines and certainly will vary based on the stage of the tournament, who else is in the pot, the size of stacks after you, etc.
