How do I overcome modestness at the table?
1st Post!! Anyway, I have a habit of scrutinizing my play at the table and after I get up from the table as well.(B&M 3/6LHE) I know this is a healty habit, but I always seem to find that even though I am earning money, I still think that I am a bad player. I keep thinking, "I could have read him better." "Why didn't I play that hand right." Basically, instead of answering these questions truthfully and objectively, I am answering them negatively. This is basically the inverse of egotism. Has anybody gone through this? Any advice?

You are thinking about this the right way. Just take it easier on yourself. You can strive for perfection, but don't beat yourself up when you acheive mere excellence.

Re: How do I overcome modestness at the table?
be nice to yourself, and treat yourself with kid-gloves. perhaps you recognize that there is room for improvement in your game, thus you question yourself. with so much literature avaliable now, you can study and make progress, but don't hassle yourself when you make a mistake. and if you play well, congratulate yourself and reach around and give yourself a pat on the back.
there is no state of perfection; all is a work in progress. think about the good plays you made, as well as the errors, but do not concentrate on one to the exclusion of the other. make it a habit to view both the good decisions and the bad ones you made during a session. work on what needs work, and enjoy and congratulate yourself on what IS working. the habit of thinking of only the "lacks" is exactly that, a habit. and you can certainly think anything you want. some habits can take time to break, and you already have already admitted that you are aware of what directions your thoughts take. be proud of your accomplishments. they are yours, and noone else's. |

YOu are on the path to greatness.
Be honest in your assessments tho. If you really did play it badly.. ask why. If you are just bad mouthing yourself.. quit it. |
