This isn't actually true. There are some, albeit very few, corporations that do not sacrifice ethics to make a buck.
In fact, many non-profit organizations are "incorporated."
Like someone said earlier, the idea is to limit liability.

However, many corporations put profits ahead of everything else.
Vioxx - so what if it gives people heart attacks? we make a buck
Exxon - so what if it cause global warming and pollutes the water? we make a buck
Agent Orange - so what it caused birth defects? we made a buck
McDonald's - so what if it's toxic? we'll call it food. we make a buck
World Bank - so what if countries are stuck in poverty with no chance to escape? We want our interest! Those little kids without clean water will just have to die.
