Most overrated common sports achievment
Has to be hitting for the cycle. They make such a big deal out of it, and its nothing too exciting. I think its close between that and a triple double in the NBA. It must be mentioned at all times.
Anything else come to mind that people go out of their way to make such a stink about? |

The cycle isn't made that big of a deal out of. It's just a neat thing that people talk about but acknowledge isn't exactly s huge thing.

Re: Most overrated common sports achievment
I don't know if you'd call it 'overrated', but I always thought the whole idea of a hitting streak was stupid. Who cares if you get a hit every game if you only hit like .285 or something during that streak? Gimme someone who'll get me some 3/4 games here and there and end up hitting .320+

Re: Most overrated common sports achievment
Triple doubles are the first thing that came to mind. Assists and points cancel each other out somewhat, but it's not really that impressive for someone to have 10 points and 10 assists in one game. and ten rebounds is never a big deal for one game, and it doesn't make it any more difficult to score points or get assists (in fact offensive rebounds probably lead to more of both), so why is it such a big deal when someone reaches double digits in all three. In most cases it just means that someone who usually gets a double double just decided to pass or rebound more on that day. No big woop on it's own.

Re: Most overrated common sports achievment
Triple doubles are important because it indicates versatility and high-energy play. Is it any coincidence that when players get triple-doubles (even a 'mediocre' one like 14p - 11a - 10r) their teams usually win? If a player is getting a triple double it means you are getting extra value from him, because it is a rare position player who can do all three of these things well. Now, if Jason Kidd gets 12 rebounds because his big men suck, and they have a negative 16 rebounding edge, that's not so great. However it is usually a good indicator of how the team is going to do and is thus not overrated (especially because it doesn't even get that much press when it happens anyway).
